Great book for newbies, intermediate or advanced carvers – heavy on information and light on sales. I’ve been carving for nearly twenty years and found tips and techniques I haven’t heard of or seen before.Plus the price is right so when you order get two so you have one to give a friend who might be interested. Great way to start !F.

Harold Lee: Marty’s book fills an important niche. Dennis Moor’s book and Wayne Barton’s “The Complete Guide to Chip Carving” book are both very good, but, in my opinion, Marty’s book is the most helpful for beginning chip carvers. It’s also helpful to folks like me who have been chip carving for a while but didn’t know some of the proper techniques that Marty explains in his book. I especially like the chapters on “Wood Grain” and “Chip Carving a Swirl Rosette”.(posted with his permission)

This is a fantastic book!! I rarely ever rate items at the top of the scale, but this book is the exception. Reading this book has helped me become a better chip carver. The details, techniques, suggestions, tips, etc. are all spot on and I consider them “Pearls of Wisdom” from someone who has been chip carving for a very long time!!I am a newcomer to Chip Carving and have reached out to Marty countless times for advice and critique of my work. Marty has never failed to provide insight into my problem areas while at the same time encouraging me to stick with it!!Great book Marty and thank you for sharing your “Pearls of Wisdom” through the beautiful pages of this book.Todd Thompson

by Duane Nimke: Hi Marty and Bethany too. Your book arrived on August the 15th and I’ve been busy absorbing every item and page and WOW have I picked up on some pointers that I didn’t know beforehand. A very knowledgeable book for the novice and the amateur too. I’ve leaned a lot from you Marty through your videos and now your book and I’ve been carving for about 7 years and I’m still learning. Keep up the good work for us old timers who thought they new all the turns and twist. I’m looking forward to purchasing your new knife when it becomes available. Received your new chip carving book the other day and found it to be an amazing resource for the chip carver, both the “newbie” and the “old-timer” (such as myself). I have been chip carving for 20 plus years and found sooo much useful info to help me get rid of the bad habits and to strive to be a better, more creative carver. Indeed, your book is full of creative ideas and solid teaching. I highly recommend your book to both the new carver and the experienced as well. Kudos to ya’ll and keep up th good work.

There are a few books that I would consider standard reading material for anyone who wishes to learn chip carving. This has instantly become one of those books. It seems not only to help the novice, but to provide a blueprint for someone who is looking to jump start their curiosity. The progression of topics is well thought out, and worth a read by even more seasoned chip carving veterans. Marty has expanded and improved this venerable craft by finding his own distinctive message, and should have justifiable pride for being one of the leaders in allowing others to discover the joy that comes from it. Guys like this are rare, and for myself, I plan to do what I can to support his endeavors now and in the future, not just because he has done so much for the art, but because what he has done is so darn good. Highly recommend buying this book.

by Bob Sanford (posted with permission): Marty’s book was a refreshing look at chip carving. Most other books seem to show a few pages on technique where Chip Carving Essentials show this on every pattern cut. I know from experience that your technique has to change depending upon the grain direction and this is pointed out. I enjoyed the first reading but as with every chip carving book I own (I think I have them all) I have read and re-read each many times.

Marty is a gifted teacher, and it comes through in the clear explanations of all aspects of chip carving. I have been carving for several years, but I learned some new things.

by Jim Beardsley: (posted with permission) Marty; I can’t believe in what I learned with your BOOK. I haven’t finished studying it yet. But, when I do I’ll send you my thoughts, your daughter ask for my response. I will tell you now, you will like it. I’m super satisfied with it. I have all the chip carving books, and DVDs and have really improved through the use of them. Thought I knew it well till I got your book it’s amazing what I didn’t KNOW !!! You have to make a DVD, (without) time restrictions….

This is a great book, very detailed and easy to understand. The book is a lot like the videos that can be seen on the My Chip Carving website, which are excellent. Marty has a teaching background which really shows in this book. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in chip carving. I have other books on chip carving but this one is the easiest to use.

I had purchased chip carving essentials about 7 days past. So you ask, is it a good book NO it’s a GREAT BOOK and I have read them all and it stands up there with the big boys. So thanks Marty on a job well done!! Augie, Colorado Springs, Co

Firstly congratulations on writing and publishing the book Marty! I guess it is a dream of any wood carver to have their own book.I won’t bring this book above Moor’s or Barton’s one, they are all very similar with just slightly different approaches. I believe, however, that Marty’s book is the most suitable for beginners for one very important fact – the chapter on finishing explains the process very through. I missed this in the earlier published books about chip carving, they mentioned very little about finishing process. It was like – here You carve the piece, now figure out. Well, it is a book I am glad to have in my collection!

What a nice refreshing book. Marty has done wonderful job putting chip carving information together. It’s in color with clear illustrations on doing rosettes, borders and projects. I would recommend adding this book to your chip carving library even if you already have W. Barton books.
