Hi fellow 73 year young!
I started carving about 5 years ago, joined a carving club 3 years ago, and have been chip carving for 2 ½ years. Thoroughly enjoying the experience.
Neil McGuireParticipantI agree with you David, Marty is a terrific resource.
I haven’t taken the CCCI course yet, but it is on my todo list.Neil McGuireParticipantHi Liz
good to hear from you. Basswood is easy to carve, but not as easy as easyboard.
You should be starting with 4mm grid to make 45 degree triangular cuts. Using a sharp chip carving knife, you can almost simply push the knife into the wood at the 60-65 degree angle.
Marty has a practice board pattern for you in the pattern section.
Best advice I have received is keep trying. It will come.
Neil McGuireParticipantThanks Russ, but no need to send the practice boards. The video link would be appreciated.

Neil McGuireParticipantThanks Russ
Neil McGuireParticipantYes, I am a platinum member. I am not surprised at the limited response as this is a new community forum. As time goes on it will get better.
I think the problem was amplified due to the shape. The narrow annulus on the 10″ plate made the carving unstable. I’m thinking about putting the plate in a container of sand to stabilize it.
Neil McGuireParticipantHi Mark,
No one has responded to my forum post here on lettering, but I received feedback on facebook.
Neil McGuireParticipantYou are right, the hook closes the design. I look forward to seeing future patterns, and I may just try one myself.
Neil McGuireParticipantGreat story.
Neil McGuireParticipantFantastic design. Why the little hook on the right end, rather than extending the spiral?
Neil McGuireParticipantnot quite right, this one should work
Neil McGuireParticipantI have carved both ways, and each has its advantages.
Carving first gives you a more stable piece to work on, however you might damage the carving when smoothing the edges.
Cutting first will give your carving hand a little more room to get that low angle owc chip.
Neil McGuireParticipantAs with lacquer, water based can be brushed or sprayed. However, water based has very low VOC’s so it can be used with less worry about ventilation. Clean up is easy too. A little light sanding (400 grit) between coats.
It seems to be clearer than shellac or lacquer,
Neil McGuireParticipantExcellent work Steve. What wood did you use?
Neil McGuireParticipantInteresting use of stone, makes a beautiful contrast
