ParticipantWell, I took 1st place in the intermediate division. I am very pleased.

ParticipantOk, thanks for the input. Here is the final project. You all are the first to see it. It will be entered in the 39th Annual Showcase of Woodcarvings in Charlotte NC this weekend.
I think you were right Mitchell, the stain is a must for the free form flowers.

I will post pictures when done. </span>Neil McGuire
Participantps, the final project will have a chipped carved picture frame in butternut. I do not plan on staining that one.

ParticipantHi Mitch, as Marty said, excellent job on the lettering. I have more difficulty with lettering than any other chip carving skill.

ParticipantHi David, I would add only a little to the great advice given above.
Make sure you monitor your grain direction. In the image here, you can see the cuts are always with the grain.
I would start with #1 and cut toward the center. Then #2 from the center. You will notice that the cuts are with the grain.
Rotate counterclockwise and repeat. However, when you get the the 6 o’clock position the grain direction changes, so should your cut sequence and direction.
Hope this helps.

ParticipantYes, Liz, what Serge said is good advice. Put the project on your lap and carve from that position. You have more strength from your shoulders in that position. For small pieces, you can get a piece of plywood to put on your lap as a table.
