I sure agree with Bill’s insights to your carving, Andrei! Another winner.
Marty LeenhoutsKeymasterI’ve fixed the link to the Marcon article. Thanks, Neil for cluing me in that something was wrong.
Marty LeenhoutsKeymasterHi Guy,
I’m going to guess that you’ve grown some mold on your basswood. Most likely it hasn’t moved very deep into the pores of the wood. Try letting it dry and sanding the surface. Maybe most of it will sand off. If some remains you can try a bleach solution and see if it that will do it with some light scrubbing with a toothbrush. The real problem is when mold penetrates deep into the wood. I’ve not found anyway to remove the gray color left behind.

Marty LeenhoutsKeymasterWell done, Neil! I see the layered effect of the rosettes as you made some cuts/chips at a steep angle to change the shadow. Cool!
MartyMarty LeenhoutsKeymasterWelcome, Steve. It’s nice to get a bit of background on you and your carvings!
I’ll be posting my introduction soon 🙂
MartyMarty LeenhoutsKeymasterGood thoughts, Neil. I’ll be carving about 30 of these ornaments in the months ahead and I plan on cutting them out first. Most years I’ll carve them on the full board first. But as Neil mentioned, this year I’ll carve them already cut out so I can easily get the low angle with my knife carving the Old World Style.
MartyMarty LeenhoutsKeymasterHI Steve,
I use the Pattern Transfer Tool for all pattern application and sanding nice and smooth before application makes a big difference.
Same is true when tracing over graphite transfer paper or drawing directly on the wood.
So I sure to agree with you on this!
