Very nice, Andrei – What type of stain did you use to achieve the color on basswood?

Jim JohnsonParticipantOverall, I like it – Certainly different-sized chips removed, and that as well as the lighting create very interesting shadows.
It could be considered over carved, but my eye is drawn to the center of the carving because of the pattern and the radiating lines coming from each corner.
So, it meets point 2 & 3 – but perhaps no special positive space to draw the viewers attention.

Jim JohnsonParticipantThanks for posting the pictures, John – unique way to combine turning and carving! Doing the layout lines while the bowl is still on the lathe is a great tip!
Your comments about using a soft pencil is even more important on wood like pine and basswood – I found 4B leads for a mechanical pencil – about as soft as can be regularly found.
Those cross-grain cuts look tricky, but it ended up well.

Jim JohnsonParticipantHi, John – Welcome. I am also a turner – do you have photos of your chip-carved turnings that you care to share?
