New work in progressHi There my friends,
I’m still a newbie at chipcarving but working on it hard on developing my skills. Here is one I’m trying to figure out. My idea came from all the seashells I have at home. I especially love the Nautilus shell because the inside spiral is absolutely perfect!
I still need to figure out the center portion of my carving. I’ll,show the completed piece once I figure it out. 🙂
I’ll probably be using inlay with this piece.
    Thanks,
    Mark

Fantastic design. Why the little hook on the right end, rather than extending the spiral?

    Hi Neil,
That’s a good question! The reason I hooked it to the right was simple due, in my opinion, to leaving the design “open”.   I am in the process of drawing two more similiar designs but this time try and make them a little more flowing and less busyness in the center.  I’ll show you what I mean when I complete the drawings.  Hope I made some sort of sense in answering your question.  Go ahead and give it a try if you wish 🙂  since I’ve been a wildlife artist since 1974 I want to try and incorporate chip carving with flora and fauna, as well as trying to developed my skills with all the geometric designs available.  Thank you so much for responding to my work! :-).    Mark

You are right, the hook closes the design. I look forward to seeing future patterns, and I may just try one myself.

    Hi Mark,

No one has responded to my forum post here on lettering, but I received feedback on facebook.

    Neil,

Are you a Platinum member on Mychipcarving.com?  I am very disappointed nobody helped you out???  I am on a learning curve just like you but I do know why you are having trouble with your lettering.  I have the same problem!

Yes, I am a platinum member. I am not surprised at the limited response as this is a new community forum. As time goes on it will get better.

I think the problem was amplified due to the shape. The narrow annulus on the 10″ plate made the carving unstable. I’m thinking about putting the plate in a container of sand to stabilize it.
