A friend asked if I could carve a plate for her as a family crest, so I came up with this design that reflects her Welsh and Scottish ancestry.  To give it more of a heraldic feel I gave it a bit of colour.

This turned out very nice.  I love the pop of color and I have always been drawn to Celtic knot work.  In fact there’s a clock pattern on here that is done with Celtic knots.  I hope to make it some day.

Thanks Julie.  Coming up with design was fun in and of itself.  I could have finished the piece with just a natural look but as this was a bit of a family crest I wanted the features to really stand out like the Welsh red dragon.

If you like Celtic knot work then you’ll definitely like dong the clock pattern.  But you don’t have to do it on just a clock.  I have applied many of Marty’s patterns to projects other than what they were originally designed for.  As an example, I was thinking that particular pattern wood work well on a flat board that for a weather station.  Simply cut out the center hole and add a fancy brass thermometer or barometer and voila!

    Enjoy carving.

    Kevin.
