Here are a few pictures of the jewelry boxes I made for my mom, daughter, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter for Christmas 2019. They seem to be a big hit. I made the cases and lid frames from mahogany and the lid panel from basswood. The cases are all box jointed. They all like the darker stains so that’s what I did. It was a bit of trial and error to get those two dissimilar woods to match. For the basswood I applied a coat of MW Ipswich pine with a good rub down followed by a MW Mahogany gel stain with a good rubdown and a dry, stiff brush in the carving. I left the mahogany unstained. Then everything got a first coat of Deft satin spray lacquer, a light sanding, and then two good finish coats of lacquer. I bought the jewelry box inserts from Amazon and then sized the wood cases to fit. The finished box external dimensions are about 16″W x 8″D x 5″H. I created the pattern based on their preferences. I would have preferred to do something more complex and traditional (’cause that’s what’s fun for me), but they seem to prefer a “less is more” approach and I aim to please. I would be happy to share the various patterns in a PDF format if anyone is interested. There are actually three different patterns, but most wanted the one shown. (more pictures in next few posts)
