I carved this on a 16″ flat plate purchased from Marty. The sun symbol is gilded with 23K gold leaf and the letters are painted with artist’s acrylic. I applied a light gel stain (General Finishes New Pine, which doesn’t require a barrier coat) and a wiping varnish topcoat (General Finishes Arm-R-Seal) around the gold and letters with a thin brush.

Thank you Marty for the inspiration, detailed lessons, and terrific tools & supplies.

Very well done! Thanks for showing. In my opinion the typeface (Uncial?) goes very well with what “Irish Blessing” kind of associates commonly.

Thank you Norbert for your kind words. The font is “Testament” (https://www.myfonts.com/fonts/canadatype/testament/), a combination of Uncial and Roman capitals.

Mitch, Fantastic lettering and finishing! I love the results you got on this plate.

Congratulations. I hope many chip carvers are inspired when they see your carving.

Hi Mitch, as Marty said, excellent job on the lettering. I have more difficulty with lettering than any other chip carving skill.

Thanks Neil. It’s taken me a long time to get decent results on letters, especially outside curves where the grain direction changes. The key for me is using a Lazy Susan and keeping it turning , as Marty shows. (That plus a lot of practice.)
