My most recent project is a “Sampler” (photo included).

My question is, should I stain it, or just finish it with satin lacquer? I am of two minds here, so your opinion is appreciated.sampler

ps, the final project will have a chipped carved picture frame in butternut. I do not plan on staining that one.

    Very impressive carving Neil.

I’ve done a few plates with lettering plus free-form designs similar to your foliage. On the ones where I used an oil finish (similar effect as lacquer) the lettering looked fine but the free-form lines didn’t have enough contrast unless there was a strong side light. I got better results with a light gel stain called New Pine (made by General Finishes), followed by a few coats of General Finishes Arm-R-Seal. I don’t like dark stains, so this worked for me.

I hope you post a photo of your carving after you put on a finish.

<span style=”-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);”>Thanks Mitchell. I was thinking of using a light gel stain. The one you suggest may do the trick.
I will post pictures when done. </span>

    Way to go, Neil!!

Impressive letter carving. You should be pleased!

I think you could go either way on finishing this one. You’ve got great shadows so the choice is up to you. Leave the shadows or stain?

Looking forward to what you decide!

Ok, thanks for the input. Here is the final project. You all are the first to see it. It will be entered in the 39th Annual Showcase of Woodcarvings in Charlotte NC this weekend.

I think you were right Mitchell, the stain is a must for the free form flowers.

Glad to know the New Pine worked for you. The finished carving looks great. Good luck in the competition!
