I want to use a gel stain (I have Varathane). I tried once before and it did not work out like the video here on the site.

My first attempt I had 2 good coats of SealCoat and it still bled into the wood.

The attempt I did this weekend was on a scrap so I did not ruin the piece I was working on. I have 2 coats of SealCoat and 2 coats of Shellac, but it still bleeds around on areas I don’t want it. I tried sanding it of, which did pretty good, but still some slight residue and I am guessing I need to go back and put on another coat of Shellac.

What am I missing? I figure with 4 coats it was not going anywhere.

Honestly, I am not sure I want to try again.

    Hello David,

Both SealCoat and Shellac are penetrating finishes. Skip these and try 4 clear coats of Lacquer or Acrylic (Rustoleum Matte Acrylic, cheaper than lacquer).

After these dry you should not have any bleeding. Post pictures of your results here so everyone can see the product. Compare to the SealCoat pictures would be nice too 🙂
