Dry, brittle wood chipping out? Here’s two helpful tips.
Have ever had this same question that came my way last night?
Good evening Marty…
I have a question… It seems that my wood keeps chipping out when I’m carving. Could this be due to too dry? I’ve had my basswood out in my shop since 2006… Is there a way I can still use it?
You can increase the moisture content in items you are carving as follows.
1. place your items on edge inside a cooler with a lid. place a pot of boiling water inside, close the lid and let is sit overnight.
This will increase the moisture content for easier carving.
2. You can also try spraying the wood with rubbing alcohol immediately prior to carving.
This spot spraying will help. Keep spraying as needed because the alcohol evaporates quickly.
This method won’t cause the moisture to go as deep into the wood as the cooler method will.
Success to you!
