Repairing Chip Out on your Chip Carving
A My Chip Carving Member asked how to repair a project when a piece chips out. He tried gluing it back in place but the stain didn’t cover evenly where the repair was made. (see image below) Here’s my reply…
Any place glue gets on an exposed part of the wood, stain will not penetrate. Apply only a tiny amount of glue very carefully making sure any glue that seeps out is wiped off thoroughly with water. I use my knife tip or a pin to apply a very small amount of glue so nothing seeps out to the surface.
To take care of your finished carving I’d try brushing on some gel stain that is the same color very carefully. Lightly brush and let dry. Reapply as many times as needed. I think that will give you good results.
